Isaiah 40:8 NiRV - Pastor Mark

“The grass dries up. The flowers fall to the ground. But what our God says will stand forever. ”  Isaiah 40:8 (NIrV)

In this passage, the prophet draws a contrast between nature and the Word of God. In the metaphor, grass represents man and the flowers, the works of man.  The question is: Which will endure the test of time? Man, and his works; or God and his Word?

As for man, we are like the grass, and our greatest accomplishments and our most memorable achievements are like the flower.  In the heat, we well know the outcome of the grass and the flower… neither has the power endure. So, it is with man.

In 1 Peter 1:23-25, Peter quotes this verse to make the point that God’s Word is the Good News that brings man salvation. With all the wonderful things we may do, our goodness falls short; but “You have been born again by means of the living word of God. His word lasts forever. You were not born again from a seed that will die. You were born from a seed that can’t die.”

You can trust His Word with your salvation, and you can trust His Word for daily direction!

I love the comparison drawn between nature and the Word of God. It is a helpful reminder about how temporary the nature of humankind truly is. Thank you Heavenly Father for the clear and consistent hope we have through the Word, and for your Son who is the Word who became flesh. The Word will outlast the lies of this world!

Our life is just a vapor. Our only hope is in our Father in heaven. He will never leave us, nor forsake us.

I made a image of the scripture in you version, saved it as a photo on my phone, and saved it as my wallpaper on my phone, so I will be reminded of this verse before I see a text or email or open Facebook, etc.

This brings 1 Corinthians 3 to my mind where we are told that all of our works will be tested by fire and the things that don't matter in eternity will burn away. May our lives be built on the sure foundation of Jesus (the Word made flesh) and may our lives reflect His purpose.

When I saw this verse, I thought of all the flowers I have derived pleasure and comfort from, but how they eventually died. I still have seeds from some or a few that originated from my great grandmothers home. But even more, when I visit the cemetery where my great great great grandfather, a captain in The Civil War is buried, I see the marble and granite and concrete headstones that I have been seeing since I was born. I see how all things except God go from order to disorder. Even those ancient stones of might and a statement that a loved one lived and died, will not remain forever. Only God and HIS power and strength will remain forever. The Alpha and Omega. I am grateful that His word sewn into my heart will be the legacy I have fought to leave for my descendants. It will outlive everything else.

"As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it" Isaiah 55:10-11

I love this verse and I love how Peter uses it to remind the church that God's Word and His Truth NEVER change. God never changes and His Word never changes. Jesus, the Truth, the Word never changes He stands forever.

It reminds me that God’s word is eternal, faithful and strong. The grass and flowers come and go with seasons. Even the ones that remain can be burned away. Only God’s word stands the test of time.
